Runners-Up In Island Wide Soccer Tournament

Finally the day had come when the kids will be put to the test to see if they had trained well. The People’s Association Children League Soccer Tournament takes place at Kovan Community Centre. More than 30 teams from across the whole country pitched their skills against each other in 4 rain soaked and muddy soccer pitches.

Admiralty entered two Teams. Both reached the semi-finals. Team-B reached the Grand Finals. They came out Runners-Up. An achievement we were all proud of considering conditions in which the tournament was played.

Rain and the wet pitch did not dampen their spirit. They fought for every ball and followed every instruction shouted to them by their parents.

Yong Zhi played in defence. He was able to clear most of the balls that reached his defensive territory, frustrating the opposition strikers. His partner in defence was equally brave. Unfortunately they lost to a single freak goal.

All the parents were so proud of them.

Year End Holidays Again

School Closes for the Holidays Again

Woodgrove Primary School closed for the Year-End School Holidays again on 16 November 2006. With a blink of an eye, Yong Yun has completed his Primary One education.

He was joint Third in his class with 2 other classmates. There were prizes for the first three positions, one for good conduct and another for best improved student. The school’s new Principal Miss Teo and Vice Principals gave away the prizes.

Yong Yun will be going to one of the two the Mega Class next year. Two Mega Classes are created for the schools best 120 students. They will get special attention in the subjects. A lot work for the kids. We let Yong Yun try it out and see how he coups.

Yong Zhi will join him in the school in Primary One.

Time really fly for them this year.

Yong Zhi’s Graduation Concert

Yong Zhi graduated from his PCF Kindergarten on Sunday. He was a participant in one of the many dances choreographed by the PCF teachers. The bunch of kids in his class were so happy that they were dancing away even outside the corridor. They were singing to the music of the other dances they were not involved and were dancing along with the rhythm.

Like last year, MP Mohammed Maliki Osman joined in the grand finale to make the evening one to be remembered well into the future for the kids, and the parents.

Look at him.

He was making all those dancing moves and jumps all evening. I have never seen him so happy before. Even demonstrating to his mummy while she try to take a photo of him with the Graduation Certificate.

Yong Le's Birthday

Yong Le’s Birthday

Today is Saturday, 11th November 2006. Yong Le will be 3 years old on the 14th November 2006. So everyone went to Xin Yi’s house for the party. Min Yi also celebrated her birthday together.

Big Uncle and Aunty Eve had prepared Japanese cooking. Tapanyaki was the main course. Fantastic fresh food cooked on the spot and eaten on the spot.

Republic Of Singapore Air Force Museum

Yong Zhi wanted to come to this Air Force Museum because there are more weapons. He wanted to learn more so that he will know how to counter his older brother when they play Power Ranger.

The afternoon showers welcome us at the Air Force Musuem.

Then off to the sea side to watch some Yishun regular fishermen catching the asam fish. The place was completely dry. Untouched by the heavy afternoon showers.

Mid Year School Holidays

It is holidays again. The kids are restless at home. I had a bit of spare time on hand and decided to spend them wisely by bring the kids to a Museum.

A Naval Museum to be precise. I sort of missed the good old days when I was roaming the Seven Seas. The Naval Museum’s guns and weapons brought excitement for the kids. But I was feeling more nostalgic because of the basic sea going compasses, engine telegraphs, signaling lamps and old fashion electronic equipments. Being from the Merchant Navy, I wasn't that interested in the weapons. Wish I could be at sea again one of these days when I had fulfilled my duties as a father.

After the Naval Museum, I brought the kids to a seldom visited place. A place which I was sure to bring some questions popping from the kids. The Bottle Tree Village at Sembawang.

Year 2006: First Day at School for Yong Yun, Yong Zhi and Yong Le

First Day at Woodgrove Primary School

A very hectic day because the timing was all squeezed together and my boss has not got used to it yet. Yong Zhi attend his K2 Class at PCF at 0800 hours. Then Yong Le attend his Shining Star Play Group at 1000 hours. Followed by Yong Yun at 1200 hours for his Primary One schooling at Woodgrove Primary School.

We had a chance to witness the school's method of helping the new Primary One children get started with school life at Woodgrove. The school is the best in Woodlands area, and I now understand why it is able to achieve the affection shown by all the parents in this area. Every year those who got a place through ballot were very happy.

During recess, there were many parent volunteers guiding the kids. Sample food from the respective food stalls were laid out on tables in a neat row. On a plate, are coloured cards with the number of the stall selling the food. The children can choose the food from these tables and pick up a card with the stall number before being guided by a parent volunteer to the actual stall itself. Save a lot of browsing at the stall front and of course minimise accidents of spilling hot soap on each other.Just like the shopping centre or night market display. And it is very effective too. Yong Yun walked and browse the displayed food samples two times before making up his mind to eat fishball noodle.

He bought the food and paid 50 cents for it. Carried to the table marked for his class. A parent volunteer was there to make sure the kids eat their food and not make a mess while eating. A very efficient and completely working very well executed plan. No chaos. No lost kids. No crying kids. I am really impressed with the whole plan. I'll have full confidence that Yong Yun will get his best in this environment. Couldn't have asked for a more fantastic model of efficiency.

No parents are allowed into the school after that. After school, parent volunteers again guided the Primary One children to the respective gates. Their parents had indicated on their name tag which gate they will be waiting to pickup the kids. Another efficient and well thought plan to make sure no kids got lost on their first days at Woodgrove Primary School.

My heart felt thanks to the Woodgrove Primary School staffs and the parent volunteers.

Yong Zhi is ever so ready to attend school.

Jurong East Swimming Complex

Jurong East. A name that really do no justice to this fantastic water playground. My kids mistook it for the Wild Wild Wet of DownTown East. So they decided to use their own name and called it the Wow Wow Waves when they finished fighting the waves.

Fun at the water Playhouse. Look exactly like the playground at our neighbourhood park, but with water.

Kumon Advance Students Honour Roll Award Ceremony
Yong Yun was awarded the Gold Prize for his standard of his work for English. Yong Zhi, as usual the more playful guy, only managed to get a Silver Award.

Both of them are always complaining that they have too much work. But they always complete their work assignment. Their English and vocabulary had improved tremendously, thank to the Specially trained Kumon teachers at Kumon.

Yong Yun's PCF Kindergarten Graduation Day Concert

PAP Community Foundation Kindergarten Graduation Day Concert 2005
This is an annual event by the Admiralty Branch of the PAP Community Foundation Kindergarten Graduation Ceremony and Dance Performance Concert.

Yong Yun is schooled here since K1. He is graduating in K2 class. Today is his big day. He is enjoying himself very much. The PCF had revamped the education system in accordance with the Ministry of Education. So there is more play and less homework.

Yong Zhi is in K1 and will be in K2 next year. He is making a lot of friends and having a lot of fun. He talks a lot, but somehow, the teachers managed to keep him quiet in class. He is as naughty as you can find. His English and Maths is improving very quickly.

Dr Mohd Maliki Osman is a very active MP for Admiralty. He is involved in all the activities. He gave the Certificates to all the graduating students in Admiralty Branch.

People's Association Children's League.

People's Association Children's League
The League started in March 2005 and ended in September 2005. A total training period of 6 months on every Sunday, rain or shine. With real professional coaches certified by the FAS. These kids were put through the proper warm up exercises and soccer drills. But the part they enjoyed most is the matches they played with each other with mini-goalposts.
We have a kid who is always scoring on the wrong side. But he likes to score as long as it is a goal. We managed to get him to score on the right side in the tournament and won. Fantastic kids.

Now the eye opener for you. We only paid $30 for the whole 6 months course. The kids each get a high quality soccer ball each. A set of beautiful jersey including the socks for training. Another set of beautiful personalised jersey for the tournament. With each kid's name on the back. This made the kids look so proud that my kids wanted to wear the jersey everyday. They sleep with the medals they won every night.

What the People's Association and the FAS is doing is really fantastic for soccer in Singapore. I was so impressed by the scheme that I volunteered to be the manager and help trained the kids every Sunday. After such an expensive and elaborate scheme, the soccer sports must improve tremendously. I think the parents enjoyed more than the kids. They were screaming more than the kids could score. The guy to thank for this fun and excitement, Professor Ho Peng Kee, President of the FAS.

Yong Yun Caught A Lampan With A Balloon Stick

Catching A Lampan With a MacDonald’s Balloon Stick
We had lunch at MacDonald. The staff gave the kids some balloons and one of them burst. But Yong Yun was still holding on to the stick and playing with it. Next visit, MacRitchie Cove to feed the lampans and tortoises. While we were there, I attached a mono to the ballon stick and put a dry fly at the end of the line. We have not even settled down when Yong Yun was shouting excitely to me.

“Dad, come quick! I’ve got something on the line.”

He was just playing with the dry fly on the water when the next moment, the lampan whacked it. A beautiful lampan. Animals and fishes can really make kids happy. I am happy as long as my kids are happy. Because when my kids are happy, my wife allow me to go fishing.

Feed Lampans At MacRitchie Reservoir
First day of the school holiday. Yong Zhi wants to feed the lampans. Yong Yun wants to catch one. So off we went to MacRitchie Reservoir at the Cove next to the Little Sister of the Poor. I started preparing the bread for the feeding by breaking it into smaller pieces. I had already rigged up a balloon stick with a mono and a Prince Nymph for Yong Yun. But before everyone could settle down, Yong Yun has already thrown some bread together with the Prince Nymph into the water to feed the lampans. He was shouting,”Papa, I’ve got something one the line.” A lampan.

Yong Yun Go Boating
Brought Yong Yun out so that my Lady Boss(Wife) can have some rest. Went to The Esplanade for some shots and to pick some durians. Brought him to Clifford Pier to meet up with some old friends from Leo Launch. Mustafa was on duty and was kind enough to bring us out to Eastern Petroleum Anchorage for a bumpy “joy” ride. I was very surprised when Yong Yun thoroughly enjoy the ride and didn’t get sea sick. Beaufort of the sea was Force 2 to 3.

Family Outing at Sembawang Beach
May Day Holiday and the kids asked to go to the beach as a reward. They had been behaving very well and co-operating with their mum. So reward it is at Sembawang Beach. Unfortunately the low tide made the outing a bit short because of the numeral pieces of glasses my boss picked up on the beach.

Yong Le's First Visit to the Singapore Zoo
School holidays. A visit to the zoo is what the kids wanted. So my boss ordered me to the zoo. Alright. Zoo it is. Yong Yun took these visits seriously. He even brought a note book and mechinical pencil. Wrote and drew the animals he saw. Some tourist were really surprised at his drawings.

Swimming Lessons at SAFRA Yishun
The demand for students in Singapore to learn swimming when they are young are debated among the parents almost daily. Being the kiasu type, my Boss enrolled the kids with the SAFRA for some swimming lessons. Very professional and competent instructors conducted the classes. Sometimes I’ll jump in and enjoy a cool dip too.

The constant disruption in an uncovered swimming pool by the weather made the parents decided on the Singapore Sports School's cover swimming pool.

Admiralty Little League Soccer
The Little League Soccer is started by the People's Association. Admiralty is our zone and the PAP Kindergarten is one of the participants. Joining fee is $30. The kids get one football each, a set of jerseys and training from a professional coach. On top of that, refreshments at every training. What more can you ask for?
